The baker boys and the bees

The city of Andernach has a great wall around it*. This wall is there to
keep out* enemies, for* Andernach is often attacked by people from
other cities. There is only one gate*, and this gate is well guarded.
2.
A gatekeeper* lives just behind the wall, and his job* is to open and
shut the gate to allow* friends of the people of Andernach to come into
the city.
3.
The gate is not opened very often. Some days* it is not opened at
all*. So the gatekeeper has a lot of spare time*.
4.
"I am very fond of * honey*," he thinks* one day. "I shall buy a few
hives* of bees* and place them on the top of the wall. There* nobody
will trouble* them." So, soon* there are a lot of beehives* on top of the
wall above* the gate.
5.
Not far away*, there is another city, called Lintz. The people of Lintz
are the enemies of the people of Andernach. They always watch each
other closely* and fight* very often.

One day the people of Lintz plan* to attack and capture the city of
Andernach. They call* their wise men* together to see how to make the
attack. And they discuss many different plans*.
7.
Finally an old man says, "Men of Lintz, you know that the people of
Andernach are lazy*. They like* to stay in bed late*. If we attack the city
before sunrise*, we shall capture it before they wake up*."

The people of Lintz think this is a good plan. The army prepares to
attack the city of Andernach, and, one night, the soldiers of Lintz march*
quietly* towards* the sleeping city.
9.
The only people* who get up early in Andernach are the bakers*.
They have to make fresh bread* for breakfast.
10.
When their work is finished, the bakers usually* go to sleep*, but
the baker boys have to stay awake* to watch the loaves* in the oven*.
Two of the baker boys, called Hans and Fritz, are good friends and are
always together*.

One morning, just at sunrise, Hans says to Fritz, "Let us climb onto*
the wall above the gatekeeper's house. I think we can find* some honey
there. The old gatekeeper is asleep*. He will not hear us*."

So the two boys go quietly up the steps*, and they come to* the
top of the wall. "Do you hear that noise*?" says Fritz.
"Yes, it must be* the old gatekeeper," says Hans in a low voice*.
"No, it is on the other ride of* the wall," says Fritz.
13.
So the two boys look over* the edge* of the wall, and there they
see the army of Lintz. A ladder* is placed against* the wall and the
soldiers are beginning* to climb* it.

"What can we do*?" says Hans. "There is no time* to wake up*
the people. And what can two boys do against an army?"
15.
Suddenly Fritz has an idea : the beehives. So the two boys seize*
a beehive each* and carry* them care¬fully* to the edge of the wall.
Then they push them onto the heads of the enemy. The soldiers of Lintz
shout loudly* as* the bees sting* them all.

Then the boys run down the steps and go to the city hall* to tell
the mayor* what is happening*. The shouts* of the soldiers wake up* the
bell-ringer*, and he immediately rings* the bells* to awaken* the people.

The men of Andernach run to the city gate, but the bees have
done their work well*. The army of Lintz is running away*.
